As I walked on the beach, the ice was cracking beneath my feet. I had almost slipped twice on the path getting there. I took my time to take off my coat and hat, my wetsuit already half on, ready to be zipped up. I put on my swimming socks, tightened my bright orange float around my waist and walked carefully to the water's edge.

I stepped into the shallow surf, walking slowly, putting on my gloves a finger at at time, biding my own time. It was cold. I started to wade out further into the water. Eventually, knowing the inevitable would come, I sank slowly down, turned towards the waves and started to swim. It was ice cold.

But it was also something else – it was beautiful. It was sharp but soft at the same time. The water was clear, clear blue-green, I could see the seaweed sway and writhe beneath me. I could smell the sweet air, taste the salt and feel the water cleanse my body and my mind. I could sense that I was between oceans and the restorative power of nature...
